A Draft Standard for the CF Metadata Conventions

A draft standard for the CF Conventions has recently been submitted to the NASA Earth Science Data Standards Process Group for review and endorsement. We briefly discuss the need for a conventions standard, the goals of the CF submission, the contents of the draft document, how the CF standard can be regarded as format independent abd applied to HDF5 data, and the steps (hurdles) remaining before CF is endorsed as a standard.
